Nuri Sardines in Olive Oil
We point to this tin a lot in the shop. Few brands are as closely associated with Portuguese conservas as Nuri. Produced by the historic Pinhais cannery in Matosinhos since 1920, Nuri has become one of the names most often recommended to people beginning their exploration of tinned fish.
These sardines are packed in olive oil, the most traditional preparation in the conservas world. With only a handful of ingredients, the tin offers a clear look at the quality of the fish and the methods that have made Nuri a benchmark for generations.
Pinhais continues to prepare its sardines largely by hand, from trimming and packing to the final stages of production. While many canneries have moved toward greater automation, Nuri remains known for preserving much of the traditional process that helped establish Portugal as one of the world's great canning nations.
